The China Scholarship Council offers a number of awards to Canadian scholars and students who wish to go study and/or do research in subject areas related to China in the Chinese universities that are open to Chinese Government Scholarship recipients for the academic year 2003/2004. Application for 2003/2004 awards, effective beginning September 1, 2003, is now solicited. And all materials must be received by the Chinese Embassy before February 1, 2003.

Eligibility
Applicants should be faculty members at Canadian institutions or students who have a bachelor's degree and may be enrolled in a Master's or doctoral program.
Applicants are expected to conduct their studies or research in the field of Chinese studies and/or other related fields.
Applicants should have achieved an intermediate level of Chinese language proficiency in both speaking and writing.

Duration of Awards
The awards are for a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 12 months from the date of arrival in China.

Value of Awards
The award from the China Scholarship Council consists of: (1) basic living allowance; (2) payment of tuition fees; (3) on-campus accommodation; (4) basic medical coverage; and (5) free textbooks from the host institution.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada will provide round trip international airfare to award recipients.

Application Procedure
Applicants should submit five copies of each of the following: (1) a completed application form; (2) a detailed study or research proposal indicating objectives, duration of proposed stay, methodologies, etc.; (3) two letters of reference from university professors or other academic personnel; (4) academic transcripts (college level and above).
In the field of fine arts (painting, graphic arts, sculpture and photography), applicants must submit six to fifteen slides or pieces of original work. These should be presented in polyethylene page, clearly identified.
In the field of music, applicants must provide a standard cassette tape no longer than thirty minutes in duration. It should include clearly identified samples of different musical styles performed or conducted by the applicant him/herself.

Selection
A selection committee consisting of five members from the Chinese Embassy, the Canadian academic community and the Canadian government will nominate a list of candidates to the China Scholarship Council before April 30, 2003 for approval and placement.
The Chinese Embassy in Canada will officially notify award recipients around August 1, 2003. Admission notice by a Chinese University along with other materials on visa and travel to China will also be sent to successful candidates.

Evaluation
The CCSEP scholarship recipient shall submit a report concerning his/her research or language learning in China within two months upon the completion of scholarship coverage. The host university is also expected to evaluate the recipient's performance on campus.
